VMworld 2013 – Day 2

Another fine keynote presentation from Carl Eschenbach, Kit Colbert and Joe Baguely went into more of a deep dive of the the Pat Gelsinger keynote from the previous day about the SDN.

vCAC, Application Director and vCOPS were the main products on show showing the relative ease with deploying new apps both in private and hybrid clouds and also how chargeback can be shown with deploying apps on different cloud platforms. This, of course, highlighted the need for agility in the datacenter and depends on IT being innovative to make these changes to infrastructure and move closer towards the future of SDN. It was important to realise that line of business and application owners can provision what they need in a timely fashion allowing them to understand the cost implications.

I also talked to PureStorage about their all flash arrays and was impressed by the GUI and the workloads that could benefit on their storage platform. The technical folk on the stand were very knowledgable and provided me with use cases for the product which will benefit a lot of I/O intensive apps.

Day 3 is shaping up to be quite a long day……stay tuned.
